Job Title: Surgical Tech Profession: Tech Specialty: Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Other Hours per Shift: 10-hour days - Variable shifts 0700-1730/0900-1930 or 1100-2130 Experience: 1 year of experience in a surgical setting preferred License: Regulatory registration as a surgical technologist required for specific locations Certifications: - Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or - Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing required Must-Have: Basic Life Support certification Description: The Surgical Tech works under the supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases. Passes items to surgeons and nurses as needed. Assists in preparing and moving patients and in sterilizing and cleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms. Uses preference cards to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled surgical or emergency procedures. Updates preference cards with any necessary changes. Sets up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures. Prepares solutions and medications used, properly labeling and reporting amounts for charting. Prepares back tables and mayo stands, anticipating the needs of the surgeon through the use of the surgeon’s preference card. Provides supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist. Assists with draping sterile fields, covering operating and instrument tables. Performs appropriate counts with the circulator prior to operations, before incisions are closed, and as needed. Delivers surgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures. Checks package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures. Prepares and sterilizes supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. Reviews and replaces supplies in the surgical case following each procedure. Discards expired medications per protocol. Assists with the terminal cleaning of the operating room. Puts equipment, supplies, and instruments away as required. Assists in prepping the room for the next patient. Holds retractors or instruments, sponges, or suctioning the operative site. Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suction apparatus, and applies dressings to wounds. Ability to provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department policy. Effectively communicates with the surgical team. Anticipates possible problems or complications that may arise during cases. Adjusts quickly and prepares for emergent cases that change the workflow. Performs all duties in a conscientious, courteous, and caring manner to maintain positive customer relations. Maintains efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours. Adheres to department procedures and acceptable protocols. Applies knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protective equipment. Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to the immediate supervisor. Participates in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities. Engages in professional development through in-services and meetings. Shares expertise to enhance the quality of patient care and staff development. Seeks learning opportunities for growth and advancement. Assists with the education of new staff and students. Demonstrates effective time management and proactively prioritizes workload. Adapts to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
