Description and Functions

Open Until Filled


Performs a variety of tasks associated with collection and abstraction of medical records from hospitals, radiation oncology centers, pathology departments, and free-standing surgery centers; to determine and code primary site(s), histologytype, stage of the disease, sites of metastases, and treatment is given; codes and enters data into cancer registry software. Performs quality control audits on data to assure accuracy and completeness in accordance with quality standards of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries. Screens pathology, cytology reports, hospital disease indexes, vital records death index for reportable diagnoses of cancer. Sends queries to physicians for detailed diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up information on patients not seen in a hospital. Collects follow-up and additional treatment information on patients to determine the spread, recurrences, or additional malignancies.

* Performs abstracting of cancer cases. * Screens pathology and cytology reports for reportable cases of cancer. * Processes hospital disease indexes and vital records death indexes for reportable cases of cancer. * Serves as a consultant for hospital registrars with necessary materials to answer questions. * Responsible for the consolidation of information from multiple sources into one database. * Responsible for case finding of cancer cases. * Participate in educational activities of local, state, and national cancer registry association. * Process data exchanges from other cancer registries. * Assist with special projects assigned.



Preference may be given to candidates who are a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR), or have an Associate's Degree in an applied science field.


* Knowledge of disease control program operations. * Knowledge of technical clinical and medical procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. * Knowledge of case finding and follow-up procedures. * Knowledge of governmental records systems. * Skill in records data management. * Skill in decision making. * Skill in oral and written communications.



Bachelor's Degree (typically in Records or Data Management)


0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Records and Data Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Records & Data Management Clerk


Education & ExperienceSubstitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Records and Data Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Records & Data Management Clerk
