Description and FunctionsOpenUntilFilledGENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Road Design EngineerI in Cheyenne, Wyoming.As a Road Design Engineer I, you will be responsible for performing various duties, under limited supervision, to provide a safe, high quality, and efficient transportation system.This job aims to develop, refine, and review the design of highway construction plans for contract bidding to improve safety in the state transportation system.Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the history of the Old West. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax.Human Resource Contact: 307-###-####ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.Develop, refine, and review horizontal and vertical alignments using road design software.With minimal oversight, establish the dimensions and geometry of roadway cross-sectional elements to determine and refine excavation, embankment, and haul quantities for roadway construction.Using Microstation and other software packages, design and detail other roadway features such as guardrail installations, culverts, storm sewer, drainage structures, utility, and right-of-way impacts.Follow applicable State, Federal, and Agency design policies and procedures.With minimal oversight, calculate pay quantities for the materials used to construct roadways and prepare spreadsheets summarizing these quantities.Attend periodic workshops to increase skills and knowledge, and train others in new methods and procedures.With minimal oversight, issue intermediate plan sets and attend inspections.QualificationsKNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of calculus, geometry, algebra and trigonometry.Knowledge of highway engineering concepts and principles.Knowledge of the WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts.Skill in technical writing.Skill in communication and time management.Skill in the use of computer applications for office automation.Ability to write reports and specifications.Ability to produce engineering plans, and develop cost estimates in a timely manner.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)Experience:0-2 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering)Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering.Necessary Special RequirementsNOTES:FLSA: Non-ExemptThe Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace.E-Verify: WYDOT uses E-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States.
