Our dynamic and dedicated staff are located at GSFC as part of Peratons Environmental Test and Integration Services (ETIS) contract. Many of the NASA spacecraft and instruments are applying cutting edge technologies to achieve the science goals. As a member of ETIS, you will be part of a team that makes sure these spaceflight programs are ready for launch and operations: you will be helping to demonstrate that the hardware will survive the space environment. A very important job!Our team provides primary support in Greenbelt, MD, but we also travel to remote locations where GSFC needs us to support integration and test of the NASA instruments, spacecraft and observatories. We even support the launch operations at the launch sites. As a new ETIS employee, you will be part of a dedicated, highly skilled group who focus on doing doing excellent work with a main focus on safety for you and the space hardware.Perform complex mechanical integration tasks by providing hands-on support to flight projects by using specialized equipment and techniquesWill work with engineers and technicians in the assembly, integration, testing, lifting, transport and launch support of space flight components, hardware, instruments and spacecraft.Will lead efforts to integrate flight hardware components, perform critical crane and fork lifts, support the fabrication and modification of specialized components, work with detailed assembly procedures and participate in logistic activities either within a team environment or individually.Will provide support on space flight hardware performing operations requiring a high degrees of skill and finesse.Will interface with multiple groups, such as QA, Safety, Contamination, etc to ensure that NASA guidelines are strictly met.Mentor fellow technicians in the proper practices of handling, assembly, testing and design of flight hardware.Develops or reviews designs by extracting and analyzing a variety of engineering data. Applies conventional engineering practices to develop, prepare or recommend schematics, designs, specifications, electrical drawings and parts lists. Examples of designs include detailed circuit diagrams; hardware fittings or test equipment involving a variety of mechanisms; conventional piping systems and building site layouts.Conducts tests or experiments requiring selection and adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records data, measures and records problems of significant complexity that sometimes require resolution at a higher level and analyzes data and prepares test reports.Applies methods outlined by others to limited segments of research and development projects; constructs experimental or prototype models to meet engineering requirements; conducts tests or experiments and redesigns as necessary and records and evaluates data and reports findings.May a lso perform temporary duties in other areas or other duties associated with area of assignment.Nature of Position ChallengesA high level of initiative is required and the ability to work with other technicians and engineers in a team atmosphere to accomplish task objectives.Uses skills, knowledge and experience to provide innovative solutions to mechanical, electrical, or electronic problems.Utilizes accumulated knowledge and understanding of test facilities and support systems to train qualified operators of test facilities and support equipment.Ability to adapt to weekend, holiday, overtime and shift work support on short notice and extended hours as required.Travel for extended periods of time to support programs through launch and at launch sites throughout the world.Leads other technicians and provides direct supervision to others in the group. Lead personnel are responsible for providing technical direction, organizing workload, scheduling tasks.QualificationsBasic Qualifications:Minimum of 15 years directly related experience working with flight hardware and mechanical systems and demonstrated a satisfactory history of working with precision hardware and components (military or technical school training is highly desired).Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in confined spaces and cleanrooms for an extended period of time.Extensive experience, proficiency and knowledge of machine shop tools such as band saws, grinders and drill presses along with more complicated machine shop tools such as a lathes or mills are requiredExperience providing fabrication support is required as is working with other disciplines or systems such as cryogenics, optics, etc.Preferred Qualifications:Experience working with assembly and detailed drawings is essentialExperience with assembling, operating and/or certifying fluid transfer systems for use is desired.Experience working with sheet metal, structural bonding, the creation of composite laminates.Knowledge of engineering terms and ability to operate computers is required. Ability to perform with minimal supervision and to read and interpret schematics, and work from sketches and drawings is required.Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of large hazardous research aerospace test facilities.Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering and / or supervision.Must be able to organize time and assignments to prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.Must possess Powered Industrial Truck Operator (PIT) Certification, Mobile Aerial Platform operator (MAP) Certification, and Crane/Hoist/Winch/Rigger Certification.Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other required training or certifications.We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
