This paralegal position is located within the School Finance Litigation Division and will primarily assist the attorneys assigned to represent the State of Wyoming in school funding matters. The paralegal hired for this challenging position will be expected to handle a wide array of tasks for multiple attorneys. The division advises the Governor, Legislature, and education agencies in the legal aspects of funding schools for Wyoming's children. The division is involved in the modification, implementation, and maintenance of the school finance system, including the school funding model's recalibration. The division is responsible for the defense of the state's funding of schools in litigation.

  • Maintain and organize case files; track court dockets.
  • Track and calendar legislative meetings and bills
  • Maintain database for contracts
  • Track and calendar court deadlines and other deadlines associated with administrative rules and orders
  • Prepare documents for opening and closing files for administrative purposes.
  • Maintain general contact with clients
  • Assist outside administrative agencies, attorneys, and the public regarding the division's work.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls
  • Schedule conference calls and meetings
  • Maintain and organize files, calendars, and other reports related to the office
  • Log and maintain mail delivery.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations, projects, and functions of the office
  • Pick up and deliver documents to other state agencies.
  • Assist with administration of established strategies and goals
  • Draft legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, motions, and other court documents
  • Proofread documents and pleadings
  • Use proper citation for case law and other authorities listed in the Bluebook of Citation.
  • Verify citations in briefs, legal memoranda, and opinions and prepare tables of cases and authorities
  • Utilize proper legal terminology
  • File court documents utilizing the proper procedure and format required by each court.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing for hearings, trials, and meetings
  • Include preparation of exhibits, witnesses' location, and arranging for their appearance, schedule conference calls and meetings.
  • Prepare agendas for, attend, and prepare minutes of meetings.
  • Maintain professional growth and development relating to the latest developments in the legal field, computer applications, and other related topics.
  • Perform investigative and legal research, including internet and Lexis retrieval of pertinent materials
  • Compile information necessary for reports and case development
  • Review, calendar, and process mail
  • Compile information for reports
  • Make travel arrangements for attorneys; prepare travel vouchers.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls
  • Assist other support staff as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Knowledge of legal procedures and law office workflow.
  • Knowledge of legal concepts, terminology, principles, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the use of legal reference material and legal research.
  • Knowledge of state and federal court policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of government and legislative processes.
  • Knowledge of Wyoming Statutes and agency mission goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of office organization, methods, standards, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint computer programs.
  • Skill in organization and maintenance of voluminous legal documents.
  • Skill in reading and analyzing moderately complex legal material, including court cases and opinions.
  • Skill in legal document preparation and editing; word processing applications on computers.
  • Skill in working with the public and other legal staff.
  • Skill in professional, oral, and written communication
  • Ability to reason logically and analyze situations accurately and recommend an effective course of action.
  • Ability to prepare reports and summary sheets, set forth a statement of the facts, applications of the relevant law, and conclusions.
  • Ability to read and understand statutes, court decisions, legal documents, and similar material.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with attorneys, support staff, technical staff, agency staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to explain the provision of law, procedures, and problems to persons contacted in the office.
  • Ability to use office equipment including computers, fax machines, Lexis, copiers, scanners, calculators.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.



Bachelor's Degree(typically in Paralegal/Legal Studies)


0-2 years ofprogressive work experience (typically in Paralegal /Legal Studies) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Legal Support Specialist


Education & ExperienceSubstitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Paralegal /Legal Studies) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Legal Support Specialist


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

National Association of Legal Assistants certificate as a CLA or ALS (Certified Legal Assistant) or CP (Certified Paralegal) or National Federation of Paralegal Association PACE Registered Paralegal.
